The capital of one of the richest Italian regions, Bologna is an ideal destination both for the cultural tourism and for periods of fun and relax. It is defined as: the well-read because it hosts the most ancient of the universities, the red because of the warm colour of its roofs and houses, the fatty because of its rich cuisine. It is easily visited on foot, walking through arcades, alleys, posh buildings and monuments.
Since its origins, which date back at least a millennium b. C. , Bologna has always been an important urban centre, earlier under the Celts and Etruscans (Felsina), then under the Romans (Bononia), and then still in the Middle Ages as a free town (for a century it ranked as the fifth European town for population).
The commonly recognised symbol of Bologna is represented by the two stonework towers
situated at the entrance of the town from the ancient Emilia road, at the centre of Piazza di Porta Ravegnana: they are the Torre degli Asinelli and Torre Garisenda from the name of the families who with these constructions wanted to affirm their prestige in order to gain important military recognitions.
The Torre degli Asinelli was built between 1109 and 1119; it is 97,20 m high and it has 498 internal steps. Today, under the porch some handicraft workshops have been replaced in remembrance of the commercial role played by the medieval “middle market” ; the Torre Garisenda differs visibly from the former one due to its shorter height (47 m) and great drop sheer, caused by an early and significant sinking of the ground and foundations.
The heart of Bologna is represented by Piazza Maggiore which overlooks the most important public buildings of the town: the Palazzo d'Accursio, the Palazzo Re Enzo, the Palazzo del Podestà, the majestic Basilica of San Petronio, the elegant Fontana del Nettuno, the Palazzo dei Notai and the spectacular Palazzo de' Banchi.
Bologna is not just a city of art but also a relevant fair complex, which hosts every year, amongst other things, the Motor Show and a first class hospital centre. Moreover, it is one of the preferred tourist attractions in Italy, because of its hospitality, the warmth of the people and the excellent cuisine.
Since it is a gateway between Northern and Southern Italy, the city can easily be reached both by car and train. In fact, one can easily reach Bologna through the motorways A1, A13 and A14. By train there are no problems because the region is crossed by all major railway lines and from Bologna central station one can find all public transports to reach every corner of the city. Reaching Bologna by plane, one lands at the Guglielmo Marconi international airport, which ensures regular flight connections between Italy and abroad.
