Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean and is the largest region of Italy from which it is separated by the Straits of Messina. To the north it is bathed by the Tyrrhenian Sea, south-east by the Ionian Sea and to the south by the Mediterranean.
The capital is Palermo and the other provinces are Agrigento, Caltanissetta, Catania, Enna, Messina, Ragusa, Syracuse and Trapani.

Situated between Europe and Africa since ancient times, Sicily has had a key role in the history of the Mediterranean and was occupied and inhabited by Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Normans, Spaniards who have produced a mixture of languages, habits, traditions, and left immense wealth of monuments and art works. The most exciting periods in terms of culture were the greek during which the monuments of the so-called Trinacria reached the level of the motherland, the Middle Ages which saw the succession and the fusion of elements Byzantines, Arabs and Normans and the Baroque in the seventeenth century and that eighteenth century gave birth to a particular style called Baroque Siciliano.
All provinces and villages of Sicily are real open-air museums: this is in Palermo, with its majestic normano buildings and theaters nineteenth, Siracusa and Taormina with the greek-roman ruins at Agrigento to the beautiful Valley of the Temples, at Catania and Val di Noto with Baroque palaces dominate where are the black lava of the powder and the white limestone.
The trip to Sicily, also leads to the discovery of many churches and cathedrals of the Middle Ages and baroque spread across the region, castles, fortresses, abbeys and monasteries of medieval times and that the Norman keep their works of art, frescoes, statues and libraries equipped with precious volumes.
From a geographic area is extremely varied with the alternating stretches of coast with rocky headlands and tall stacks of long strips of sand covered by Mediterranean scrub. The hinterland is sometimes green and fertile, and sometimes arid steppe and the presence of volcanoes, the most important of which is Mount Etna, Stromboli and Vulcano give a charm to the landscape beyond comparison..
Sicily are also several smaller islands, such as the archipelago of the Aeolian Islands to the north, that of Egadi west and the islands of Pantelleria, Lampedusa, Linosa. Even the Pelagie Islands are politically part of the province of Agrigento although geographically linked to the Tunisia.
